Watermelon Frost Mouth Ulcer Medicine

About two weeks ago, Baby Ethan had a nasty mouth ulcer, just below his tongue. At first, I had no clue as to why he was refusing food, but then someone pointed out he had this big white ulcer in his mouth! Duh! Really, there's nothing worse than a clueless mum!!!! *roll eyes*

Anyways, I took him to his pediatrician and she gave him a bottle of Oral Aid to use. I like Oral Aid. I'd have to just squeeze a drop into the struggling kid's mouth to numb the mouth and presto, all done. However, after 3 days, the ulcer got worse. This time, I was really worried as he had not been eating. Keep it up kid, and you'll have to check into the kiddy ward for dehydration. I called the good doctor up, and this time, she asked me to switch to Kenalog. Most people in Malaysia, Australia and Singapore would be familiar with it. I wanted to snap a photo of the tube of Kenalog, but my 3 year old decided to flush it down the toilet before I could get to it. Apparently, it's hard to find in USA because the drug in itself is an immunosuppressant. It belongs to the category of drugs not as corticosteroids. These drugs suppress reactions by the immune system. I like Kenalog as well. I've used it before. It's like a wet sandy paste that covers the ulcer, so when I eat anything, I don't feel any major discomfort. I also have Bonjela in my fridge. Actually, the Bonjela tube you see in the picture belongs to my 31 year old baby brother. It tastes nasty as far as I'm concerned. And it kinda stings a bit before it numbs the ulcer temporarily.

I knew anything in a tube that has to be squeezed out to put into Ethan's mouth would be a struggle, because as far as he's concerned, he's not eating anything that tastes bad. Besides, he's bitten my finger before and it's like a Piranha comping on it's prey. I really don't want to go there if I can help it. So, I started searching for a simpler alternative. Something that was herbal, something I could get easily at the drug store. My answer? Watermelon Frost! (see the first picture right at the top of the article)

It fits my criteria. It's herbal. It's a squeeze bottle, which delivers a puff of med into the kid's mouth without having my finger bitten off in the process, and it's cheap. It's only RM3.50 (only USD$1, can you believe it?) Perfect!

I squeezed the bottle of Watermelon Frost meds 3 times that day (after his meals, or lack of it) into Ethan's ulcer, and by the the next morning Ethan was eating and drinking like the ulcer never existed! Great stuff.

I was so excited, I could not wait to show this amazing medicine to my sister-in-law, who, get this, said she knew about it all along! Heck, my mother-in-law uses it too! Another duh! It goes to show how little I know about Chinese herbal medicine.

CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF BABY AMBER

This afternoon, my mum got a pleasant surprise package; a Full Moon present from a family we have never met.

For those who don't know what a Full Moon is; the end of the full moon period marks the first month of a Chinese baby's birth. It is also the period when the mother completes her confinement period which to me is also known as the month of pampering, eating lots of meat and wine ... if the old folks have their way, and smelling like a caveman in the hottest month of July because, again, the old folks believe bathing will make a woman's body weak in the later years. Frankly, I think getting the good woman smelling like a bed of garbage just turns the husband green in the face. A man won't, in his right mind, want to do the horizontal mumbo with a being that smells faintly of rotting fish, right?

But, back to the baby.

It was a surprise for my family to receive this gift because we don't know who they are. My mum had asked the Indian guy who handed her the box of goodies if he got the right address, and he said "yup". Turns out, he is the driver for the family who lives in the big house on the hill near where my mum lives. He said, the father of the baby asked him to hand out these gift boxes to random houses around the neighborhood. It's really intriging, the reason why they did that because the usual method is to pass the gift boxes to limited friends and familes.

Anyways, I'd like to think, doing this act of random kindness, if you will, is a nice way of making new friends, with neighbors whom we have never got in contact with. Brings cheer to everyone who receives it as well.

MY NEW PHONE FONTS ARE SO TINY!

Despite the fact my eyesight is perfect, I have problems seeing some of the fonts on my new PDA phone. I think these types are phones are meant for 15 year olds, not really for a person like me. Still, I'm pumped. Like my dad, who is a Big Boy Toy fan, I love gadgets. This little puppy has WIFI, GPS, camera which will allow me to finally put up some photos on my blog, and so on.

Speaking of eyesight, I found out some of the shops in Singapore are now selling organic dried Goji Berries (kei chi seeds or chinese wolfberries or medler seeds). That's so cool, cause now, I don't have to worry about pesticides and what-nots sticking to the fruit. Goji Berries, by the way, is really good for the eyesight. The Chinese for centuries have been using Goji Berries in slowly boiled soups, to not only enhance the flavor of the soups, but to also improve the eyesight, strengthen the immune system and so on. It's really one of the more powerful fruits we can eat.

I do use them in traditional, boiled soups, but I find it's more effective to eat sun dried Goji Berries raw. It's like eating sun dried raisins. All the goodness is still inside the berries since heat has not destroyed the fragile properties of the vitamins and enzymes. I sometimes just carry a small bag of the fruit in my pocket, in case I get hungry, while I'm out somewhere. If you google Goji Berries, you can find amazing facts and figures about how good Goji Berries are for us all.

Cheap, little tasty Goji Berries can be found in most chinese medicine shops or Asian stores around the world. Just walk in and ask if they have the kei chi fruit.
